Up to 10,000 Communication Workers Union (CWU) members will walk out for 24 hours, causing disruption to mail deliveries across the city. They claim the “arbitrary” job cuts, affecting about 1,600 workers, would threaten services and downgrade staff into part-time positions. The Royal Mail said a fall in mail volumes meant modernisation was needed and this meant fewer jobs. CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward said: “Royal Mail is blocking modernisation by refusing to negotiate change with the CWU. “We have offered a moratorium on all strike action if Royal Mail will suspend executive action and enter into meaningful negotiations.” Mr Ward added: “The future of the business must be safeguarded through careful planning, not shooting from the hip.” But a Royal Mail spokesman said: “A strike will not modernise Royal Mail – it will simply disrupt the service to which customers are entitled, lead to an even greater loss of business and leave Royal Mail far less able to protect full time jobs. “Productivity in Royal Mail offices in London already lags behind the rest of the UK with the productivity in parts of London now 10% worse than the UK average.” He added: “We are only putting in place changes which are already agreed with the CWU as part of the 2007 deal.”

An investigation is under way after a train derailed in Liverpool causing disruption to services.

The incident happened at Olive Mount junction, near Broadgreen station, on Thursday night. Fire crews attended the scene and led 39 passengers to safety along the railway line back to the station. One person suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital. Services between Liverpool and Preston, Wigan and Manchester are all affected. The front wheels of the train, which was travelling from Blackpool to Liverpool, derailed at about 2100 BST. Three crews from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, including a specialist search and rescue team, attended the incident. Two wheels of the 1937 Blackpool to Liverpool service derailed near Broad Green station in Liverpool at about 2100 on 11 June. Passengers are advised to check with train operators before travelling on Friday morning. Delays of up to 60 minutes were being predicted for Northern Rail services. A Northern Rail spokesperson said: “All 39 passengers on the train were escorted on foot to Broad Green station and taken to their destinations by coach and taxi. “One customer was taken to hospital suffering from suspected whiplash.

“An investigation into the cause of the incident has started and replacement bus services are operating.” Trains between Manchester Airport and Liverpool Lime Street were not running on Friday morning. Services to Liverpool Lime Street from Manchester Victoria and Wigan North Western were stopping at Huyton. Trains between Blackpool North and Liverpool Lime Street were only running to Wigan North Western.

The soldier, from The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion the Royal Regiment, was caught in the blast while on operation near Kandahar on Thursday. Lt Col Nick Richardson said all thoughts were with the soldier’s family, who had been informed. The death brings the total number of British troops killed on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 to 167. It follows that of Rifleman Cyrus Thatcher, with the 2nd Battalion the Rifles, who died following an explosion near Gereshk in Helmand province on 2 June. The 19-year-old, from Reading, Berkshire, was killed while on patrol. After the latest death, Lt Col Richardson, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: “It is an incredibly sad day for the whole of the Task Force but our thoughts and prayers go out to the soldiers of The Black Watch and particularly the bereaved friends and family of the soldier during this very sad time.” Brig Gen Richard Blanchette, spokesman for the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force, added: “We will remember this life and priceless service in support of the Afghan people with great respect and gratitude.” Condolences were offered by politicians from the Perth area, which has strong links to the regiment. Peter Wishart, SNP MP for Perth and North Perthshire, said: “This is very sad news, a second Black Watch soldier killed in just over a month. “This loss will be felt very deeply throughout Perthshire.” Roseanna Cunningham, Scottish Environment Minister and SNP MSP for Perth, said: “My prayers are with all those who are grieving today and with the families of other members of the Black Watch serving in Afghanistan.”
